Susan King Taylor Battle Nurse Black History Tote Bag
Defend Black Memories: Susie King Taylor was born into slavery in Georgia in 1848 and secretly received an education, despite laws banning Black literacy. During the Civil War, she escaped to Union lines and became the first Black Army nurse to serve in combat, caring for members of the 1st South Carolina Volunteers.
Carry a story of courage, service, and remembrance with this Susan King Taylor tote bag. The design honors Taylor, an African American Civil War nurse and educator, and features the words “Defend Black Memories,” a thoughtful statement for history keepers, educators, readers, and anyone committed to preserving Black stories.
