About Defend Black Memories

Defend Black Memories (DBM) is a Brooklyn-based apparel and storytelling brand created by journalist and art curator Dick Burroughs. The brand turns overlooked Black history into wearable culture, using historically accurate public-domain portraits, original patent drawings, and QR codes that link each garment to a deeper digital archive

Founder

Dick Burroughs is a Brooklyn-based journalist, writer, and art curator whose work sits at the intersection of culture, politics, and Black history. His reporting and storytelling have explored a wide range of topics, including public policy, race, sports, real estate, and the ways communities preserve memory when institutions fail to do so.

He created Defend Black Memories as a cultural response to the growing suppression of Black books, history, and DEI in America — using fashion as a platform to keep erased stories visible in everyday life.
